Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo (Rani Baug), Byculla (East) is a major landmark in the area. The Museum is located in the same compound, a 2 mins walk from Byculla (East) Station.

The Education team offers free, virtual guided tours of the Museum's permanent collection and ongoing special exhibitions.

Free Public Tours

Free public tours of our upcoming exhibition will be conducted every weekend by a member of the education team. Tours are available on weekdays for educational institutions and school groups on request. These tours encourage visitors of diverse backgrounds, ages, and interests to engage with the Museum collection, history, architecture, and contemporary exhibitions Please call us or email education@bdlmuseum.org for details.

Groups may book themed tours on request. Particularly popular are tours that focus on the history, development and cultural heritage of Mumbai. Groups may also book interpretive tours of the Museum’s temporary special exhibitions. Our tours can be conducted for audiences of varied age and interests.

  Audio Guide

Scan the QR codes put up on the showcases and hear the stories of the Museum - its history, architecture and collections come to life! Point your mobile phone camera to the QR Code or use a QR Code scanner app on your mobile devices to access the audio guide.

Languages

The audio guide is available in English, Hindi and Marathi.
Visitors are requested to use their own headphones to be able to hear the information.

  Shop

The Museum Shop supports traditional craftsmen and NGOs and has a unique selection of gifts, many of which have been inspired by the Museum collection. On display are Museum inspired mugs, bags, postcards, puppets, diaries and magnets as well as traditional products like paper mache, bidri, shawls and bronze statues. A wide range of coffee table books, artist monologues and publications on Mumbai are also available.
To mark its 150th anniversary, the Museum co-published a new book titled 'Mumbai - A City Through Objects, 101 Stories from the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum', edited by Tasneem Zakaria Mehta. Available for purchase online.

  Cafe

Visitors have the opportunity to relax and take a break whilst exploring the galleries or enjoying a performance. Overlooking the open, green environment of the Plaza, the Museum Cafe offers a wide selection of specialty teas, coffees, snacks, cold beverages and Wi-Fi.

  Museum Policies

The Museum endeavours to make every visit a special and memorable one. We hope you will assist us by following the rules while on the premises.

  • The Museum Plaza, including the Museum Shop and Cafe will stay open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on all days except Wednesdays and select public holidays. Last entry is at 5:30 pm. The Museum will remain shut on Wednesdays.

  • The Special Projects Space will open to the public from 14 December 2023.

  • The Education Centre will be open for planned workshops, events, performances, and screenings. Please see the Calendar page for upcoming events.

  • The main Museum building is closed to visitors for essential repairs.

  • The Museum Library will remain closed to visitors and researchers till further notice.

  • Visitors are requested to co-operate with Museum staff and security personnel to ensure safety and follow all rules and regulations.

  • Take care of your belongings and accompanying children.

  • Note the Museum’s established photography guidelines, listed below.

  • Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the Museum premises.

  • If you need to attend to a phone call, please step out of the Museum galleries so as to not disturb other visitors.

  • No outside food or beverages are allowed inside the Museum premises.

  • No weapons or flammable items are allowed inside the Museum premises.

  • Chewing gum, gutka or paan is not allowed inside the Museum premises.

  • Filtered drinking water is available in the Museum Plaza.

  • Please contact the gallery attendants or the Museum staff in case of any emergency.

  Photography Guidelines

  • Museum visitors are permitted to take photographs only for personal and non-commercial use.

  • Photographs taken on the premises cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed, or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner whatsoever.

  • Individual visitors or photography enthusiast groups who visit the Museum to photograph with DSLR cameras or professional camera lenses, will need to inform the curatorial team upon arrival at the Museum and sign an undertaking before photographing the Museum. The undertaking can be requested at the ticket counter.

  • Visitors may take photographs in the Museum’s permanent display galleries and the Plaza without the use or aid of a flash, tripod or monopod.

  • Video and the use of movie or film cameras is strictly prohibited.

  • Please show consideration for the experience and privacy of other visitors when taking photographs.

  • Do not take photographs of other visitors, staff, administrative offices, INTACH Conservation Lab, INTACH Documentation Centre, Special Exhibitions Gallery, Special Project Space and Education Centre without prior permission.

  • Photography is not permitted in the Museum Shop for commercial reasons.

The Museum is under CCTV surveillance. The Museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to withhold and/or withdraw permission to photograph on its premises or to reproduce photographs of objects in its collection or on view during special exhibitions.
